Height: ~60 feet
Description:
These dunes lie on the north shore of Mono Lake on the Western side of the Sierra Nevadas. Technically, they are unnamed, but I refer to them as the Bodie Railroad Dunes because they have covered up the out-of-service Bodie Railroad tracks. The dunes are downwind from the Mono volcanic fields, so I suspect their sediment may contain more juvenial volcanics than most dunes. I haven't looked at the grains under a microscope to confirm this, however.
Directions: Follow 395 north past Mono Lake. Somewhere near Lee Vining, turn right onto a road leading west. After a couple of miles, turn south onto a dirt road towards the lake, and you'll hit the dunes. Unfortunately, there are several dirt roads heading towards the lake, and I don't know which one to turn on to.
Booming: These dunes were partially snow-covered when I visited
them so they didn't boom. I haven't tested them for
burping yet.
